Godwits & Gannets

( About Janet Pates )

Janet Pates is one of New Zealand's strongest emerging short story writers with a Steinbeck- like simplicity of style, and a diversity of topics that makes her collected works fun to read and re-read. In our busy lives, her stories, filled with humour, pathos and quirkiness, can be fully enjoyed and savoured in the short moments of time afforded by a ride on public transport, a lunch break or the few moments before lights out. Treat yourself.

Graeme Beals.

Publisher

Zenith Publishing Group Ltd.

Janet Pates offers an eclectic mix of stories ranging from thoughtful explorations of family connection to humorous yarns; a licorice assortment of stories to choose from depending on your reading mood.

Fiction Editor.

Bravado magazine.

Janet Pates has a wonderful eye for character. From feisty Evangeline in 'Bearer of Good News' to the billowing Belle Divine, to young Janey who outwits Witchy Poo the characters jump off the page at you. All the other ingredients of a good story are here too. The stories are insightful, the settings quintessential New Zealand and the plots compelling.

Sweeties And Smarties.

The waitress put down the cup of coffee. "There you go, Sweetie."

"Don't call me Sweetie," said Frances.

"Well, sorree. I was only trying to be nice."

Julie stared at the rigid back of the departing waitress. "Grandma! Do you have to?"

Frances smiled. "At my age I've surely earned the right to speak my mind."

"But she didn't mean anything."

"Yes, she did. She meant, 'You're old. You don't have a sexy bum like me.' It's the pigeon holing I can't stand. I don't stick her in a box labeled 'waitress.' For all I know she might be studying to be a brain surgeon."

"Maybe you should ask her for a transplant," muttered Julie. "Stop raving on and drink your coffee."

Frances picked up the cup. "At least they give you a handle," she observed. "I told them in that fancy new place down the High Street, if they wanted me to drink out of a soup bowl they better bring me a spoon." Frances looked at her grand daughter over the rim of her cup and felt a twinge of conscience. She shouldn't embarrass the girl. She was lucky to be brought here; very posh. Nothing cosy about it, though. The cavernous room, half empty on this midweek afternoon, was all dark surfaces and sharp, glittery edges.
